Wishing You A Happy, Bible-Full New Year!

We had a fun and relaxed class on Sunday, allowing more time for conversation among friends and giving these energetic Middle School students an opportunity to showcase their acting skills. Given only 5 minutes to prepare, four teams gave very entertaining performances of the following Christmas Skits:

“Hot Tempers At Hotel Bethlehem”
Joseph, in panic because Mary is going to have her baby any minute, gets increasingly upset when he realizes his reservation has been canceled and the grumpy, impatient hotel manager won’t give him a room.

“Shepherds With The Shivers”
A group of shepherds huddle around their campfire to keep warm. They keep trying to scare the youngest shepherd (a city boy who has never been out in the country). When the heavenly choir of angels suddenly appears, everybody is terrified – except the youngest.

“Wise Men and Wild Men”
The three Wise Men encounter a raiding party of camel thieves who are determined to steal their camels and their gifts for the baby Jesus.

“Barnyard Baby Shower”
Mary’s teenage girlfriends decide to throw a baby shower for her in the stable a few days after baby Jesus is born.

As we prepare to enter 2014, I again challenged the class to consider accepting the 12:13 “Read Through The Bible” Challenge. Every student received a copy of the Discipleship Journal reading plan. And as you will see from the picture below, at least two students have accepted the challenge are getting a head start on their reading!

During the first three weeks of January I will be out of the country. I get to participate in a strategic conference in Central Asia and then lead our annual short-term trip to Uganda. In my absence, three gifted teachers are going to take turns serving the 12:13 class. They are excited to share with the students, and I’m excited that the class will get to benefit from their instruction.

Due to my travel, I will not be updating this blog until the end of January. But I look forward to returning on Sunday, January 26 as we launch our next 12:13 teaching series: “What Makes Me A Christian?”

Whether or not your family participates in the 12:13 Challenge, may Paul’s words characterize the atmosphere of your home in 2014: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (Colossians 3:16).
